HISTORY OF NORTHWOOD

Before 1953, there were two thriving Disciples of Christ Christian Churches in Beaumont; First Christian, on the corner of Magnolia and North Streets, and Washington Boulevard Christian Church on the corner of Washington Boulevard and Orange Street. Because there was no Disciples of Christ Church in the north end of Beaumont, the two churches mutually decided to begin a church in that area. It was through their efforts that Northwood Christian Church came into being on Pentecost Sunday, 1953.

At a spirit-filled meeting in the chapel of First Christian Church in Beaumont, 44 individuals committed themselves to the development of this new congregation. It was said that "Northwood began through love."

Meetings held on Sunday morning at Mont Leon Hall, 555 Mariposa, had nine classes in one room. At the time the charter was closed there were 83 members. Groundbreaking ceremonies were held August 22, 1954. The first service was held in the new building on Easter Sunday, April 10, 1955. The new building was dedicated May 1, 1955. During this time, Northwood grew and flourished.

God truly blessed this congregation when in 1962, they acquired the current property - 6.5 acre plot of land on what was to become Eastex Freeway. On October 25, 1964, the official groundbreaking of the new Northwood building took place. On September 12, 1965, Northwood dedicated the new sanctuary, where we worship today.

All the ministers at Northwood have served with grace and with the leadership of the Holy Spirit as they sought to move the church forward and help its people grow spiritually.  Its members are caring and generous people who seek after the Lord with all their heart, mind and soul.  Northwood was born out of love and a desire to go where the Gospel was not being heard. Love and desire birthed this church, it has sustained this church, and it will help take it into the future. Northwood seeks to serve this community through sharing the love of Jesus Christ.
